  • Releases iPad App

We are very pleased to announce the launch of the iPad App which is now available for download from the AppStore. iPad App

We spent a lot of time making sure that the experience on the iPad took advantage of the bigger screen and you'll notice after using the app for a while, how enjoyable it is to flick through high-res photos of properties. Maps are also a joy to use and are a great way find property in your neighbourhood.

Since this is a universal app (works on iPhone, iPod and iPad), there are also some improvements included in this version for iPhone users. A new system for managing memory was implemented, which means that there should be no more crashing. We also made some small improvements to maps and the property details page. As always feedback is welcome and in fact is the main driver of our feature set, so let us know by emailing us at or posting a review in the app store.

  • iPhone App - Update

We have just released an update to the widely popular iPhone App which is now available in the app store. Download it here >

Based on your feedback we have implemented the most commonly requested features:

    • Improved Stability:
We have worked hard on reducing the memory footprint (ie the main cause of crashes) for photo browsing and users should see a huge improvement in this area. We have also got the app working efficiently on iPhone OS 3.0 and above which should increase the number of people able to download the app.
    • MyDaft Integration:
Users can now login to their mydaft account directly from their phone. Favourite searches and ads will automatically synch with the website. We are currently working on extending this integration to include renewing ads, deactivating/reactivating ads and adding photos to ads directly from your phone.
    • Advanced Search:
Users can now click the advanced button in the search form page and get access to more search options to really refine down their search to find their perfect home
    • New Search Categories:
We have added both parking space search and new homes search

Over 32,000 people have already downloaded the app since January and we are averaging just over 5 million page views a month which is about 4% the usage of the main website. In addition, we are now generating 4,000 phone calls a month and 2,000 emails for our advertisers from users of the app.

If you don't already have the app, here's the link to download it from itunes:

  • Irish Rents May Have Reached the Bottom

The latest Daft rental report is just out and it shows that rents rose by 1% in January. It's probably still too early to call as rents are still down 25% from peak, but the rental market may have reset to a new level and stabilised.

  • iPhone App - The Stats iPhone App

We've been developing for mobile for many years now. We launched one of the the first WAP sites on the digifone portal back in 1999. In 2005 we launched on i-mode. Despite being backed by huge outdoor ad campaigns, i-mode and WAP never really lived up to their promise. We had more people visting via their desktop browser in one minute than an entire month on i-mode/WAP. So by and large, mobile has been a total waste of time for us, that is, until now.

The iPhone App was launched on Christmas Eve 2009 after a six month development effort. We expected it to be popular but the usage stats have blown through even our wildest expectations.

To date the app has been downloaded 13,627 times, which is great, but download data doesn't tell us very much about usage behaviour. Luckily, Google launched google analytics for mobile in November, so we've been able to track the app usage in the same way we track usage on the main website.

  • Daft Launches iPhone App

Just in time for Christmas and after 6 months in development, we are very happy to announce the release of the iPhone app.

The app should feel very familiar to regular users of as we worked hard on mirroring the usability and functionality for the main Daft website.

    With the app you can:

    - Browse our entire database of properties (sales, lettings, sharing, holiday homes and commercial).
    - Browse photos
    - Email and call advertisers directly from the app
    - View location of property on a map
    - Get directions to a property
    - View nearby properties
    - Refine searches based on price, number of bedrooms and location
    - Save your favourite searches and properties to browse through at a later date.

Download the iPhone app from iTunes now >>

Please leave your feedback and suggestions on this blog or email us at, we'd love to hear from you.

  • Playhouse Winner

For anyone who didn't spot the post over on the playhouse blog, the winner of the €1,000 playhouse prize was TA3. He is a hugely talented street artist based in Dublin and I would encourage you to check out his website and browse through some of his previous work.

ta3 - The winner of the €1,000 playhouse prize

Here is the animation he submitted.

  • The World's Largest Twitter Client

Using the playhouse app platform, Tim Redfern has built what is probably the world's largest twitter client. To get your tweets broadcast on liberty hall just put in the #playtweet hashtag into your twitter message. Your message will stream across the top marquee and your profile picture will bounce up onto the main display. Messages will be moderated and will be streamed to the building from tonight until Sunday. Check out the test display broadcast last night:

As always, in between the twitter messages the user generated animations will still be displayed. Here's a nice youtube video showcasing some great animations, if you haven't seen the building yet:

  • Win €1,000 For the Best Playhouse Animation

If you have been in Dublin city centre after 8pm over the last two weeks, you probably noticed that there's something going on with Liberty Hall. This is of course the Playhouse project, of which is the main sponsor. With Playhouse, we started out just wanting to do a clever above-the-line branding campaign for Daft, but the project has been a much bigger success than we ever anticipated.

Over the course of the last 14 days there have been 552 animations submitted by people from all over the world. There have been over 15,000 online viewers of the live show and literally tens of thousands of people who stopped and looked every evening on O'Connell bridge, Millenium bridge and many other great vantage points in the Dublin city centre. Two days ago someone even created a facebook fan page to ask us to keep the show running indefinitely and it now has over 2,000 fans. Unfortunately, the show has to end as it is part of the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival and this Sunday will be the last night of playhouse. However given the public response to this project, you never know, we may look to run this again at a future date.

There are still 5 days left, so there's still time to get over to the playhouse website and submit your own animation. We are offering a €1,000 prize for the best animation submitted before midnight on Friday the 9th of October. The winner will be decided by public vote.

    Vote Now
Browse the gallery and place your votes now to decide the winner and leave comments on this blog on who you voted for. The winner will be announced live on the building on Saturday night.

Finally all of us at Daft would like to thank the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival and SIPTU without whom this project couldn't have happened.

UPDATE: Deadline for submissions has been extended to midnight on Saturday and the winner will be announced on the building on Sunday night.
